Maria Lekakou is a Professor of Maritime Economics at the Department of Maritime and Business Services of the Aegean University and Dean of the School of Business Administration and Chair of the Blue Development Committee "Aegean Archipelago". 

She has published on European shipping policies for island transportation. Greek Shipping, Competition in Coastal Navigation, the Impact of Cruises on Destinations, Maritime Transport and Social Innovation for Corporate Social Responsibility in Shipping, Sustainable Entrepreneurship in Marine Tourism, Application of the Transport Equivalent in the Greek Islands, and Sustainable Blue Economy.

She is active in social innovation, blue growth and governance, and education of local and social partners. Co-organizes the European Sea Days since 2012, the competition for blue youth entrepreneurship issues BLUEHACATHON since 2015, and LIVING LABS for these actions, the Aegean University was named National Champion in the "European Entrepreneurship Promotion Awards 2020" in "Investment in Entrepreneurial Skills".

She is a Member of the Circular Board of Sporos Platform, the first circular investment platform, and the Advisory Board of BLUEGROWTH.
